Technology: TNO tests SolarEdge arc detection and prevention
SolarEdge has revolutionized the world of solar power. The DC-optimized inverter solution has forever changed the way solar power is generated. Through our Power Optimizers, we enable maximum energy production while maintaining system safety. And now we are increasing the safety of generating solar power systems even further.
The conclusion after extensive testing at TNO: Integral safety approach SolarEdge exceeds current industry standards.
Built-in arc safety features
Built into SolarEdge's inverters is Electrical Arc Detection (AFCI) that shuts off power if an arc is detected in the DC circuit. As an additional safety feature, Sense Connect has been developed by SolarEdge. This technology ensures that when detecting an increase in temperature in the connectors, the power will cut off. Based on testing by TNO, these requirements meet within the UL1699B standard. These tests showed that the current is switched off by the arc detection within 0.64 seconds and the arc stops.

Sense Connect
Sense Connect is the additional safety feature that interrupts the power of the Power Optimizers if a connector of the optimizer rises above a certain temperature. The temperature can be transmitted through 3 short connection wires between the connector and the optimizer, after which the increase in the optimizer is measured with temperature sensors. Even before the connector reaches a temperature of 200°C, which is well below the ignition temperature of plastics, the power is disconnected. If the temperature in the connector then drops again, power is restored. When the optimizer goes through the cycle 5 times it will remain off.
SafeDC™
Another SolarEdge safety measure is SafeDC™ which reduces the DC voltage of the optimizers to a touch-safe 1V. This safety measure takes effect in the following situations:
- As soon as the inverter is switched off on the AC/DC side.
- When the inverter detects an arc.
The string voltage will remain below 30 ov 50 volts DC in the event of an emergency. Once the inverter is back in production mode and all parameters have been checked, the voltage of the optimizers will be increased again to the optimal operating level.
SolarEdge's SafeDC™ is certified in Europe as a DC disconnect according to IEC/EN 60947-1 and IEC/EN 60947-3 standards and to safety standards VDE AR 2100-712 and OVE R-11-1.
